Immersion Trips 2008-2009
What they are
They are trips that would be taken by CHISPAS members to locations around Florida and eventually, the country that give first-hand experience and insight into the realities of migrant agricultural workers.
Locations
This is a new project and for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009, CHISPAS would be traveling to locations within Florida. The first location is Immokalee, Florida. For next year, there is also a great possibility of traveling to North Carolina.
Frequency & Length of Time
We hope to have this program be one of the culminations of our efforts in helping out the migrant population. Annual trips can be arranged during the spring and summer break. Harvest time dictates when travel would occur; most crops are harvested in the spring and consequently, the number of migrant workers rises. Spring break would allow 1 week of immersion whereas summer break would allow a varied amount of time depending on the group of volunteers.
What we would do
Tasks and activities would range in variety. Within the Friendship House at Immokalee, Florida, volunteers would be treated no differently than the residents of the house. Chores would be assigned and maintenance of the house would be priority. Opportunities will arise for volunteers to visit the fields and talk to the workers. Here, we can offer our services like english classes, health materials and other resources for them to have for their own well-being on the fields.
Traveling, Lodging and Food
Transportation is solely the responsibility of CHISPAS. We can rent a van or carpool in members' cars to make the 4-hour drive down to Immokalee. Lodging is taken care of courtesy of Immokalee Non-profit housing. We would be staying in the community center where cots and blankets are available. Please note that lodging varies from location to location. Food and other expenses are not provided.
Preparation and Logistics Planning
Lots of preparation is required for a trip of this magnitude not only for the volunteers traveling but for the activities and resources that are to be presented.
The semester prior to the trip, volunteers will be asked to coordinate community outreach events for the collection of toiletries and clothing. All clothing and items collected will be transported and taken as gifts to the location. By the same token, preparation in terms of the organization of materials and resources will take place during this time as well.
Meetings will take place throughout the semester prior to the trip in order to organize and plan accordingly. Interested volunteers must attend these meetings.
Who can Attend
All CHISPAS members can attend. Priority will be given to members over non-members. Because the groups can only be around 15-20, applications will be made available for those interested.
